New Green Technology Programs Spring Up at ECC
ECC is about to launch two “green” certificate programs. Renewable Energy Technology, the second such program in the state and the first in northern New Jersey, will be offered this spring through the college’s Division of Engineering Technologies and Computer Sciences. The Division of Biology and Chemistry is preparing a Green Building Management program, expected to start within the next year. The programs are designed to help meet the national and state goals of reducing the use of non-renewable energy with such renewable sources as wind and solar power. Students will gain expertise to work in companies that provide, install, and service the required technology.
The 29-credit Renewable Energy Technology program can be completed in two semesters. It includes such newly developed courses as Principles of Sustainability, Energy Auditing and Weatherization, and Solar Installation Technology. PSE&G, looking for expertise in energy audits and solar installation, is providing support for the program.

ECC Awarded U.S. Department of Education PBI Grant
ECC has been awarded a one-year $845,631 Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) program grant by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant is dedicated to enhancing the competence of low- and middle-income African American students in mathematics and English. Project goals include enhancement of faculty’s interactive and computer-assisted instruction skills in teaching developmental courses, ensuring student mastery of web-based software to further their progress to college level courses, and transitioning out of school youth and other special populations to college-level English and math through nationally tested best practices.
Additionally, the grant provides the opportunity to augment ECC’s endowment. When the college raises an additional $40,000 in private funds, the contribution will be matched from the grant toward ECC’s endowment. If you wish to help in this effort with your own contribution, contact Annette Weis at (973) 877-3007 or email her at aweis@essex.edu.

Wolverine Soccer Team Ends Season in Tough Loss
ECC’s nationally ranked men’s soccer team lost 3-2 on October 25 (following double overtime) to rival Mercer in the Region XIX semi-finals, bringing the season to an end. Coach Hugo Pierre’s fourth ranked Wolverines finished at 11-3 and was looking to defend both their Region XIX and Northeast Division titles from last year.
