Satellite Service

Downlinks Defined

The Center provides access to video programs offered via satellite. Most of these programs are teleconferences, which are live, interactive programs on a variety of subjects. Participants throughout the country can interact with the conference presenters via telephone, fax or email. Information about upcoming teleconferences is often sent to faculty and staff from professional organizations which produce these programs. Information can also be obtained from the internet.

Teleconferences can be integrated into course lectures or can be a session in a larger professional conference. Often a local speaker or teacher does a presentation before and/or after the teleconference to enhance and clarify the topic. Most classrooms on campus can receive satellite programs.

Some satellite programs are not live or interactive but are unique pre-recorded programs unavailable elsewhere. All satellite programs, including teleconferences are usually recorded on videotape and then made available through the Martin Luther King Library or the MPT Center. In addition to the videotaped program, associated print materials are also available.

Costs

There is often a licensing fee associated with obtaining a satellite program. This fee varies from $25.00 to a few hundred dollars. Check with the program’s sponsor for the actual fee. Sometimes satellite programs are free.
