Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Q: What math class do I need to take?

A: It depends on your major.  Reference the online college catalog to see the list of required courses for your degree or certificate program. Most programs require you to complete or test out of MTH 092 and to complete at least one math class numbered 100 or higher. When you first enroll at Essex County College, you should be given placement information about your Math and English classes.

If you have questions, please talk to an advisor in your major area or to a math advisor (Blue area, second floor)

Q: My math course requires online homework, but I’m having trouble signing up.  What should I do?

A: Your instructor should have given you some information about it, but most ECC math classes use either MyMathLab or Webassign.  (These are commercial websites owned by publishing companies, not Essex County College.)  In order to sign up, you will need a course code from your instructor.  It might be written on your syllabus or a handout your instructor gave, or a classmate might have it.  You also need an access code.  If you bought a new textbook in shrink-wrap, there should be a card inside with the access code.  Some publishing companies will allow you to buy access directly from the website without a card.  If you are still having trouble, ask your instructor.

Q: I tried to register for my math class online, but I got an error message.

A: Look at the exact error message.  If it says “prerequisite” error, then you do not have the prerequisites for that course, and you should consult your academic advisor or a math professor to find the right course.  But if you are trying to register for MTH 086 or 092 and get a “corequisite” error message, then you just need to sign up for the appropriate tutorial.

Q: I want to test out of a math class.  What should I do?

A: New students received placement on the basis of their academic records and placement test results.  For more information on placement tests, click here.

Q: I need help in my math class.  Where should I go?

A: For help with MTH 086/092/100, the best place is the Learning Center.  For higher math classes, try the MESA Center in room T206.  Tutors are available in the MESA Center 9 am -7 pm M-Th, and 9-5 Fridays.

Q: Can I have a copy of the review sheet?

A: Yes, some review sheets are available on our Math Testing Page.  If you are in a different class, ask your instructor.  Not all classes have review sheets.
